Abstract

Due to the unpredictability of the natural environment, the dynamic and adaptive approach of the adventure sports coach’s pedagogical intervention suggests a greater appreciation for professional learning through sports practice and professional pedagogical experiences. This study sought to analyse a surf coach's sources of knowledge for her pedagogical intervention. A qualitative case study was conducted with an experienced female surf coach. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews to obtain information about the coach’s sources of knowledge for teaching surfing. Thematic analysis procedures were used to inductively identify thematic patterns in the data. The coach’s main sources of knowledge for her pedagogical intervention in surfing included learning through participation in her daily work as a coach and within the sporting context of surfing (sports practice, surfing instruction, social interactions, travel, observation). The sporting practice of this sport also played a central role in the coach’s learning experience. One of the predominant aspects of the sources of knowledge mentioned by the coach is the appreciation of learning situations unrelated to an institutionalised educational system, as found in studies with other surfing and adventure sports coaches. The coach’s professional learning to teach surfing was guided by her continuous engagement in social interactions in situations related to this sport and by an ongoing process of reflection on her professional practice.
