Abstract

Introduction: Physical activity and adapted sport play a fundamental role in the lives of people with disabilities, serving as both a means of rehabilitation and a catalyst for overall development. However, it is essential to expand opportunities for development from a social, participatory and community-based perspective. In Concepción, Chile, the Adapted Physical Activity Symposium provides a platform for dialogue, fostering reflections on the comprehensive nature of training and sporting events. Method: A qualitative analysis was conducted using a phenomenological design and a hermeneutic approach, based on semi-structured interviews and a focus group with the presenters. Results: Three categories emerged from the analysis of the presenters' discourse: physical activity and adapted sport as promoters of social participation, opportunities for social connection, and rehabilitation. Discussion: The scheduling of training sessions and sporting events should incorporate spaces for peer and community engagement, enabling the holistic development of athletes. This, in turn, contributes to their athletic performance, rehabilitation, and overall quality of life while promoting a rights-based perspective and active participation across various contexts.
