Origin and present of Women's Taekwondo (WT) in Argentina: a gender perspective

Abstract

The records of women's history in Taekwondo are limited due to social, cultural and ideological conventions about women's participation in sports. This paper provides an initial contribution to the origins, development and present women’s history in “Olympic Taekwondo”, as it is popularly called. The main objective of this research is to identify and outline the female participation in Argentine Women’s Taekwondo (WT), from its origin to the present day, on the basis of a series of interviews with outstanding Argentine women in the discipline. This article also identifies the contributions of women in the international challenges of the sport in adult categories. In addition, it synthesizes and condenses the historical moments that have determined the universality of female subordination, discovering and recognizing its androcentric forms, in order to contribute to the deconstruction of this prevailing ideology that has been sustained over centuries of history. Thus, in Taekwondo as in all human activities, the struggle and debate for gender equality is still an unfinished task.
