Main Article Content
Abstract
The objective of this research is to record the implementation and development of physical education as a discipline and pedagogical practice in Chile between 1889 and 1920. The first date signals the beginning of the obligatory nature of the teaching of physical education in the school system, while the second indicates its institutionalization in the higher Institute of physical education of the University of Chile. In the study of the process of constitution of physical education as a discipline and teaching practice we would like to understand the political, cultural and social context that had an impact on its development, the discussions on pedagogical models that should have been adopted in our country, as well as the mechanisms through which these models should have been socialized through the school system. Finally, we wish to understand the definition of the role that physical cultivation could have and should have played in the project of expansion of the State of Chile since the beginning of the last century
