Dropout And Retention Rates In Children's Rugby In Argentina. A Pedagogical Analysis In A Regional Rugby Club (2016-2024)
Main Article Content
Abstract
Dropping out of sports participation during childhood constitutes a phenomenon of pedagogical, social, and sporting relevance, particularly in team sports such as rugby. The present study analyzes the factors associated with continuation and dropout in children’s rugby in Argentina, focusing on clubs belonging to a regional rugby union. A descriptive–interpretive approach is adopted, considering boys and girls aged 6 to 13, distributed into two age groups: 6–9 and 10–13 years. Data were collected through the analysis of 716 institutional records that had not been officially published and open-ended semi-structured surveys administered to coaches and family members. The results indicate that early dropout is associated with negative pedagogical experiences, low perceived competence, and less inclusive motivational climates. Among children aged 6 to 9, play, enjoyment, and motor exploration are key factors in continued participation. Among those aged 10 to 13, the premature intensification of technical training and selection processes increase the risk of dropout. It is concluded that continued participation depends on pedagogical quality, coach education, and institutional support, including management and economic considerations.
