Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the ergogenic effects of music on muscular endurance in the lower and upper body of young adults. Twelve young adults aged 23.8±2.7 years participated in the study. Two groups of six participants each were formed. Muscular endurance was measured with the squat and bench press to failure. All participants performed the test with and without music. The music was selected by each participant and listened to immediately before and during the exercises. The load was chosen by each subject and ranged between 60 and 70% of estimated maximum strength based on their experience. The total group averaged 26.3±12.6 repetitions without music and 26.9±10.4 with music for the squat. The bench press averaged 24.4±14.4 repetitions without music and 25.7±14.9 with music, respectively. When the group was divided into men and women, there were no differences in the number of repetitions in the squat and bench press under either condition. The use of music as an ergogenic aid for muscular endurance did not improve the number of repetitions in either upper- or lower- body exercises, a finding also consistent across the participants’ sex.
