Abstract

In a universe of constant transformations in the conceptualization and definition of sports practices, this work aims to analyze the sportization process of footvolley in Uruguay, observing the adaptations and reconfigurations that this practice has undergone since it left its country of origin, Brazil. To understand this process between 2003 and 2018, we used interviews with two players and news published in the newspaper El País. The analysis shows that the practice has undergone an incomplete process of sportization. If, initially, the sport spread only in the tourist regions of the country and during the summer period, the path towards sportization promoted some changes. The first was a geographical expansion of the practice, also spreading to the countryside. Furthermore, it was observed that the creation of an association that served as support for the dissemination of the practice facilitated international participation in professional activities. However, in this trajectory, the interviewees themselves point out the limits of local adherence to a practice that seeks to be global, mainly related to the Uruguayan geography. We conclude that local aspects are important constraints on the sportization processes of practices that aim to globalize.
