Fratres in Armis: imaginaries, genders and corporalities in historical medieval combat in Córdoba, Argentina

Abstract
This article explores some aspects of historical medieval combat in Córdoba, Argentina, analyzing the intersection between culture and sport from an anthropological perspective. It is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted between 2019 and 2022 at the civil association Córdoba Medieval, investigating issues related to subjectivities, genders, and bodies as they are shaped through this sporting practice. To this end, the text examines the hybrid nature of medieval combat, an activity where European traditions converge with elements of modern sports and imaginaries produced by cultural industries. Additionally, it hypothesizes about the gender dynamics at play in combat and the dimensions related to the masculine corporalities shaped by this practice. The analysis suggests that the practice of historical medieval combat reinforces certain masculine ideals while simultaneously offering counterpoints to hegemonic norms of sporting corporality.
