Abstract

Several studies have highlighted the importance of psychological scales being validated in contexts in which they will later be used. This is a measure that enriches the validity and reliability of the instrument. The tendency is to use sport-specific scales. The aims of this study were: (a) to know psychometric properties of the adaptation of the scale of intention to be physically active among 9–12 year-old basketball players, and (b) to verify this measure at the same basketball level. A total of 619 players participated. The instrument was adapted and content and comprehension validity was obtained. Subsequently, the instrument was administered to analyze construct validity (exploratory factorial analysis ―all items were grouped in a factor― and confirmatory factor analysis ―χ2/df = 3.94; SRMR = 0.015; GFI = 0.93; CFI = 0.95; TLI = 0.93; RMSEA = 0.04), criterion validity (r = 0.74; p < 0.000), internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.88). The participants’ intention to continue playing basketball was high (M = 4.64; SD = 0.43). The scale has proved to be a contextualized, specific, valid and reliable instrument, which was reinforced by the high values shown by the participants’.
