Abstract

Lower limb explosive strength is one of the main components of musculoskeletal fitness related to both health and sports performance. The aim of this study was to establish reference values for lower limb explosive strength in adolescents in the city of Nampula, Mozambique. This is an observational, cross-cutting study with a sample of 2,545 adolescents aged between 10 and 16 of both sexes. Data was collected using the horizontal jump test and analysed using basic descriptive statistics, generating percentile values of 3, 5, 10, 25, 50, 75, 90, 95 and 97. The independent measures T-test and one way ANOVA were used to compare the performance of the adolescents according to gender and age respectively. The results indicated 50th percentile values ranging from 153cm to 182cm in males and 143cm to 152cm in females. Statistical differences between the sexes were evident at all ages, with males showing higher values. The reference values for lower limb explosive strength corresponding to these percentiles will be useful both for situating the performance of adolescents and for monitoring its variation in later years.
