Is there, in fact, an Elite in Brazilian Orienteering?
Main Article Content
Abstract
The elite athletes of Brazilian orienteering do not fully meet the expectations of the term. The lack of time in both physical and, mainly, technical preparation contributes to a competitive disparity among the athletes within the national scenario, where a select group has and seeks conditions for self-development. This study sought to characterize the training methodology of Brazilian athletes and examine the factors influencing the conditions for qualitative practice. An observational, cross-sectional study was conducted using a Google Forms questionnaire consisting of 68 questions responded by 89 elite male and female orienteering athletes. Descriptive statistical analyzes were performed in terms of mean, standard deviation and percentage. It was shown that most of the athletes have limited practice time in the sport, in addition to having started late in the discipline. Furthermore, most of these athletes do not engage in technical training with the minimum regularity proposed by the literature. The Brazilian orienteering elite needs attention from its Confederation regarding athlete classification for this category.
